La Manzanilla Artist Retreat

Accommodation in Casa Primavera (Carol’s artist retreat centre) in La Manzanilla, Jalisco, Mexico

La Manzanilla, Jalisco is a quaint fishing village 20 minutes north of Melaque/Barra de Navidad and about one hour north of the large port Manzanillo (similarly named, but a very different place!)

La Manzanilla is situated on a long, flat, safe beach on the Bay of Tenacatita – the main street runs alongside the beach, which is the main attraction. It is safe for swimming, and there are many beach restaurants with umbrellas and tables – lots of choice in restaurants throughout the village – from very inexpensive taco stands to romantic restaurants with  European menus.

For information about La Manzanilla click here and start your dream vacation.

Specifically, about Casa Primavera:

There are 2 rooms that could be available at different times:

-a large bed/sitting room on the second floor, (under a palapa), with good natural light. The stairs are outdoor, providing private access to the room.
-a double bed with cotton linens, towels, etc. provided
-small rustic closet for clothes
-private outdoor shower (hot and cold water)
-private lavatory
-a large wraparound “teraza”
-Kitchenette

The room and teraza are large enough to use as a part time art studio as well, and there is good ventilation.

The downstairs area includes a more conventional bathroom, open air living room and a larger kitchen.

At the back of the house is a big yard with a covered area to use as studio space.

You can see pictures of the house (in renovation mode, and more up to date ones) - and read about my adventures in La Manzanilla my blog.

My house is a short 4 block walk to the beach, main village and restaurants.

Money

Only Mexican pesos are used in La Manz…if you arrive at the Manzanillo airport, and take a taxi to La Manz, you can have them stop at the bank machine in Cihuatlan and use your ATM card to get pesos – that seems to be the best value. The taxi fare is from $50 to $70.  That cost is for the car, so you can share if you find someone on the plane who is going to La Manz – ask in the Manzanillo airport, or even on the plane if you are bold!   One idea to check on this website a few days before you leave:

Just post a message asking if someone wants to share a ride (if they are arriving on the same flight as you) and/or ask how much the taxis are currently charging, so you will be prepared. I think the machines usually have an English option, by the way.

Getting to La Manzanilla

LaManz is about 40 minutes north of the Manzanillo airport, (so this is the usual way to get here)… and is 3 ½ hours south of Puerto Vallarta. If you choose to arrive in Puerto Vallarta, you can get a bus to Melaque, and then a taxi back to La Manz…a much longer trip, and it would depend on flight times to make it worthwhile, and have you arrive in daylight. Alternatively, you could stay overnight in Puerto Vallarta on the way here…with taxi fare to a hotel, hotel costs, etc., and then a bus trip to Melaque and a taxi back to La Manz, you will probably add about $100 and most of a day to the cost. For these reasons, most people prefer to fly into Manzanillo.

Please let me know if you have other questions....it is good to come prepared – for the peace, freedom, and sunshine of the Costalegre.
